Abstract of my talk

Since the birth of the “World Wide Web” as the most successful application of the Internet, the web has been the hope of literary theorists (e.g. George P. Landow and David Jay Bolter) that the new digital media will finally allow for the “death of the author” and the birth of the “writing reader”. In this talk I will ultimately argue that the author cannot disappear or “die” in this context because its central characteristics will not allow this to happen. Therefore the Internet does not stand for the “death” of the author; instead it seems to be a fountain of youth for literary authorship. These findings are discussed using recent experiments with authorship in digital literature.

Der nordamerikanische Künstler Rob Matthews hat kürzlich einen 5000 Seiten starken Band drucken lassen, der alle „featured articles“ des freien Internet Lexikons Wikipedia enthält. „Featured articles“ ist sozusagen das “best of” von Wikipedia – eine Auswahl von 2500 aus fast 3 Millionen Artikeln. 30 cm hoch ist dieser Schmöker, mit dem Rob Matthews Wikipedia als Internetquelle hinterfragt. Bekanntlich schreiben auf Wikipedia eine unglaublich Menge an Autoren mit. Es besteht die Möglichkeit Texte zu ergänzen, Änderungen vorzuschlagen und Diskussionen zu starten. – Das Internet ist längst eine Plattform geworden, auf der viele Nutzer selbst schreiben und eine Vielzahl verschiedener Möglichkeiten zum Schreiben im Netz entwickelt haben. Florian Hartling ist Medienwissenschaftler an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. Seine Doktorarbeit “Der digitale Autor – Autorschaft im Zeitalter des Internets” ist soeben im Transcript Verlag erschienen.

Häufig lassen die traditionellen Gatekeeper (Verlage etc.) Autoren auch aus nichtliterarischen Gründen nicht in den Markt. Das führt dazu, dass Schriftsteller ausgeschlossen werden, worunter sie auch sehr leiden und sich auch wirklich ausgestoßen fühlen. Diese haben jetzt mit dem Internet die Möglichkeit, selber aktiv zu werden und eine Aufmerksamkeit für sich selbst herzustellen. Es ist nicht einfach, sich gegen die vielen anderen Stimmen im Internet zu behaupten, aber das Netz bietet ja ganz viele Möglichkeiten der Selbstvermarktung – und wer auf diesen geschickt spielt, der kommt auch durch.
